Data Transfer

Exchanging data between WLCG centres is managed by the Grid File Transfer Service, developed by the EGEE projects. It has been tailored to support the special needs of grid computing, including authentication and confidentiality features, reliability and fault tolerance, and third party and partial file transfer.

Network transfer architecture

Optical fibre links working at 10 gigabits per second connect CERN to each of the 11 major Tier 1 centres around the world.

This dedicated high-bandwidth network is called the LHCOPN (LHC Optical Private Network).

A Google Earth overlay is available, and clicking on the sitename will give the current network statistics and traffic details.

You can also see the real-time traffic status between CERN and the other T1s at the LHCOPN network 'weathermap'.

Detailed information about WLCG networking can be found in  LHC high-level network architecture (2005).
